Same-day dryer vent service

Dryer Vent Cap Replacement in Pinellas County

The cap on the outside of your house does two jobs: it lets the dryer's air out, and it closes to keep rain, wind and animals from getting in. When the flap rusts open, sticks shut or traps lint behind a screen, the whole vent suffers.

We replace wall and roof caps at a fixed price, clean the line behind them, and check that the new damper opens and closes. Teams in Clearwater, Largo and Seminole.

Cleaning with the new cap

A new cap on a clogged line doesn't help, so we check the airflow and clean the line.

You approve the price before we start. We always check the airflow first, because a cap problem often hides a clogged line.

What we see

What goes wrong with dryer vent caps

Stuck open. Lint, rust or a broken hinge keeps the flap open. Rain, humid air, birds and lizards get in.

Stuck shut. Paint, packed lint or a warped flap blocks the air. The dryer runs hot and slow.

A screen or tight louvers. Screens and bathroom-fan style caps catch lint within weeks. The code doesn't allow screens on dryer exhaust.

Storm damage. Wind can crack plastic caps or rip them off the wall, and wind-driven rain then runs straight into the duct.

Warning signs

Signs your dryer vent cap needs replacing

1

The flap doesn't move when the dryer runs.

2

The flap hangs open when the dryer is off.

3

Lint packed behind louvers or a screen.

4

Rust, cracks or missing pieces, or the cap is loose on the wall.

5

Water in the duct or around the dryer after rain.

6

Nesting material sticking out of the cap.

The 10-second test: with the dryer on high, the flap should open fully and you should feel strong, warm air. With the dryer off, it should fall shut on its own.
Our process

How we replace a cap

  1. We measure the airflow at the old cap and look at the duct behind it.
  2. We remove the old cap and clean the opening.
  3. We clean the line if it's restricted, so the new cap isn't fighting a clog.
  4. We fit a dryer-rated cap with a damper, sized to the 4-inch duct, and seal it to the wall or roof.
  5. We test the damper with the dryer running and off, and measure the airflow again.
Local know-how

Caps that last near the Gulf

Salt air rusts thin metal caps in a few years on Clearwater Beach, Indian Rocks Beach and Madeira Beach. We use caps suited to coastal air, such as heavy plastic or stainless options.

Hurricane season is hard on caps. After a storm, check that yours is still on the wall and still closes. Our dryer vents after a hurricane guide has a checklist.

Roof caps on tile and shingle roofs need a cap made for dryer exhaust, not a bathroom-fan cap. See roof dryer vent cleaning.

FAQ

Dryer vent cap questions

Should a dryer vent cap have a screen?

No. Screens trap lint and aren't allowed on dryer exhaust under the building code. To keep animals out, use a dryer cap with a guard or a damper made for dryer vents.

Which dryer vent cap is best near the beach?

One that won't rust: heavy plastic or stainless steel, with a damper that closes on its own. Thin painted steel caps don't last near the Gulf.

Why is water coming in through my dryer vent?

Usually a flap stuck open or a cap that cracked or came loose. Wind-driven rain then runs into the duct. A new, sealed cap fixes it.

Can you replace the cap without cleaning the vent?

Yes, but we check the airflow first. If the line is clogged, a new cap won't make the dryer work better.

How far from a window does a dryer vent have to be?

At least 3 feet from openings into the building, unless the dryer manufacturer says otherwise.
