Same-day dryer vent service

Roof Dryer Vent Cleaning in Pinellas County

When the laundry is upstairs or in the middle of the house, the dryer vent usually runs up through the attic and out the roof. Air slows down on the way up, lint settles at the top, and the roof cap packs solid until almost nothing gets out.

We clean the line from the roof and from the dryer, clear or replace the cap, and measure the airflow at the cap before and after. Local teams in Clearwater, Largo and Seminole, usually the same day.

What we see

Why roof vents clog faster than wall vents

The air has to climb. A wall vent pushes lint a few feet sideways. A roof vent pushes it 10 to 20 feet straight up. Once the airflow drops a little, lint stops making it out and falls back onto elbows and the top of the run.

The wrong cap. Many roof caps in Pinellas were made for bathroom fans, with tight louvers or a screen. Lint catches on them in weeks. The building code doesn't allow screens on a dryer exhaust for exactly that reason.

Florida attics. A summer attic is hot and humid. Damp lint sticks to the duct walls, and a run that sags between supports collects it in the low spots.

Nobody sees it. You can see a wall flap from the yard. A roof cap usually goes unchecked until the dryer starts taking two cycles.

Warning signs

Signs your roof dryer vent is clogged

1

Clothes need a second cycle, even on high heat.

2

Lint on the roof around the cap, or in the gutter below it.

3

The laundry room or closet gets hot and humid while the dryer runs.

4

The dryer shuts off mid-cycle because its high-limit switch tripped.

5

Birds going in and out of the roof cap in spring.

6

A burning smell. Stop using the dryer and call (727) 454-0061.

Quick check from the yard: run the dryer on high and look up at the roof cap. If you can't see the flap lift at all, the line is probably restricted. Our signs of a clogged dryer vent guide has three more tests.
Our process

How we clean a roof dryer vent

  1. We find the vent's route through the attic and measure the airflow at the roof cap first.
  2. We set up safely on the roof and work around shingles, barrel tile or metal panels with care.
  3. We open the cap and clear the packed lint by hand and with a vacuum.
  4. We clean the full line with rotary brushes and a strong vacuum, from the dryer end and from the roof on long runs.
  5. We check the attic run for joints that pulled apart, sagging sections and foil duct.
  6. We clear or replace the cap and make sure the damper opens and closes.
  7. We measure the airflow again and send before-and-after photos.
Local know-how

Roof vents across Pinellas

Two-story homes in Palm Harbor, Countryside, Oldsmar and Safety Harbor often have the laundry upstairs, with the vent going straight up through the roof.

Barrel tile roofs are common in newer communities. We step carefully and check the cap's seal before we leave.

Flat and low-slope roofs on condo and villa buildings, from Feather Sound to Clearwater Beach and Seminole, collect lint and debris around low-profile caps. See our condo and HOA programs.

If a wall route would be shorter, moving the vent off the roof can solve the problem for good. See dryer vent rerouting.

FAQ

Roof dryer vent questions

How much does roof dryer vent cleaning cost?

It's quoted on the phone because the price depends on roof height, pitch and access. You get the number before we come out. Ground-level wall vents start at $99.

Can a roof vent be cleaned from inside the house?

Short runs sometimes can. On most roof runs the lint packs at the top, and a brush from inside just pushes it tighter into the cap, so we clean from both ends.

Should my roof dryer vent cap have a screen?

No. The building code doesn't allow screens on dryer exhaust because they trap lint. A proper dryer cap has a damper that opens with the airflow and closes when the dryer stops.

How often should a roof dryer vent be cleaned?

At least once a year. Large households, pets and long attic runs usually need it every six to nine months. See how often to clean a dryer vent.

Can you move my dryer vent from the roof to a wall?

Often, yes, when a wall route is shorter. We measure both routes and give you a fixed price. See dryer vent rerouting.

Do you work on tile and metal roofs?

Yes. We work on shingle, barrel tile, metal and flat roofs, and we check the cap's seal before we leave.
