Signs of a Clogged Dryer Vent (and 3 Quick Tests)

Short answer

The most common signs are clothes that need a second cycle, a dryer or laundry room that gets unusually hot, a burning smell, lint around the outside vent, and an outside flap that barely opens. If you smell burning, stop using the dryer until the vent is checked.

10 signs your dryer vent is clogged

  1. Clothes need two cycles. A normal load of towels should dry in one cycle on high. When it takes two, the wet air isn't getting out.
  2. Clothes come out hot and still damp. The dryer is heating, but the moisture has nowhere to go.
  3. The top of the dryer is hot to the touch. Heat that should leave through the vent stays in the cabinet.
  4. The laundry room or closet gets hot and humid. Some of that air is leaking out of a loose or crushed connection.
  5. A burning smell. Lint near the heater or in the cabinet is getting too hot. Stop using the dryer.
  6. The dryer shuts off before the cycle ends. Its high-limit safety switch trips when the airflow drops and the temperature climbs.
  7. Lint around the outside vent, on the wall, the ground, a balcony or the roof.
  8. The outside flap barely opens, or doesn't move at all when the dryer runs.
  9. Lint behind the dryer or on the floor around it.
  10. It's been more than a year since the vent was cleaned, or you don't know when it last was.

3 quick tests you can do in five minutes

1. The hand test at the outside vent

Run the dryer on high heat for a few minutes, then go outside to the vent. You should feel a strong, warm push of air and see the flap open fully. A weak puff, or no movement at all, means the line is restricted somewhere between the dryer and the cap.

2. The towel timer

Wash a normal load of bath towels and dry them on high. Note how long it takes. A healthy vent usually dries a load of towels in one cycle. If it takes noticeably longer than it used to, the airflow has dropped.

3. The flap check

With the dryer off, look at the outside cap. The flap should fall shut on its own. If it hangs open, lint, rust or a broken hinge is holding it, which also invites birds and moisture. If you can't find an outside vent at all, that's a reason to call: the vent may end in the attic, a soffit or the garage.

What usually causes the clog

In Pinellas homes we see the same causes again and again:

  • Lint buildup along the full run, worst at elbows and at the cap. Florida humidity keeps lint damp, so it sticks to the duct walls.
  • A crushed transition hose behind the dryer, especially in shallow laundry closets. See transition hose replacement.
  • A long run with too many bends, so the air slows down and drops its lint.
  • A roof vent where the lint has to climb and packs into the cap. See roof dryer vent cleaning.
  • A bird nest or pests in the vent. See bird nest removal.
  • A stuck or screened cap. See cap replacement.

What to do today

  • If you smell burning, stop using the dryer and unplug it (or turn off its breaker). Call us at (727) 454-0061.
  • Clean the lint screen after every load, and wash it with warm soapy water every few months. Dryer sheets leave a film that blocks air.
  • Pull the dryer out a few inches and check the hose behind it. If it's flattened, torn or white vinyl, don't use the dryer until it's replaced.
  • Don't run the dryer while you're asleep or away from home until the vent has been checked.

Questions

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. Failure to clean is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Lint is highly flammable, and a clogged vent traps heat around it.

Can a clogged vent damage my dryer?

It makes the dryer run longer and hotter, which wears out parts. A common result is a tripped high-limit switch or a blown thermal fuse.

Is it safe to keep using the dryer until the appointment?

If there's no burning smell, the dryer isn't shutting itself off and the cabinet isn't very hot, short supervised loads are usually fine. Don't run it while you're asleep or away. If you smell burning, stop.

How often should I have the vent cleaned?

At least once a year, and more often for large households, pets or long runs. See how often to clean a dryer vent.
