DIY vs. Professional Dryer Vent Cleaning: What You Can Do Yourself

By Dryer Vent Clean Experts, founded by Steven Johns in 2012 · NADCA certified · Local teams in Clearwater, Largo and Seminole · Updated October 2026

Short answer

You can clean the lint screen, vacuum the lint-trap opening, check and replace the hose behind the dryer, and clean a short, straight wall vent with a brush kit. Roof vents, long runs, condo vents, nests and anything that still doesn't pass air after cleaning are jobs for a professional.

What you can safely do

  • Empty the lint screen every load, and wash it every few months.
  • Vacuum the lint-trap opening with a narrow crevice tool, as far as you can reach.
  • Check the hose behind the dryer. Replace foil or vinyl with a listed semi-rigid metal connector, 8 feet or less.
  • Check the outside flap while the dryer runs and when it's off.
  • Clear lint from the outside opening by hand, without pushing it back into the duct.

Cleaning a short wall vent yourself

If your vent goes straight through an outside wall with a run of a few feet, a brush kit can work:

  1. Unplug the dryer. For a gas dryer, turn off the gas valve first.
  2. Pull the dryer out and disconnect the hose from the wall.
  3. Feed the brush in from the wall side, turning it in the direction the kit says. Turning the wrong way can unscrew the rods inside the duct.
  4. Vacuum the loosened lint at both ends.
  5. Clean the hose, reconnect it with clamps, and push the dryer back without crushing it.
  6. Run the dryer and check the airflow outside.

Where DIY goes wrong

  • Lint pushed deeper into an elbow or the cap, making the clog worse.
  • A brush head stuck in the duct, or rods that come apart inside.
  • Joints pulled apart inside a wall or the attic, where you can't see them.
  • Ladders and roofs. Roof work is the most dangerous part of this job.
  • Gas connections bumped when moving a gas dryer.

Questions

Can I use a leaf blower to clean my dryer vent?

It can blow loose lint out of a short run, but it won't remove lint stuck to the walls, and it can push clogs into elbows. It doesn't work on roof or long runs.

Are dryer vent brush kits worth it?

For short, straight wall vents, they help between professional cleanings. Turn them in the direction the kit says so the rods don't come apart.

How do I know the DIY cleaning worked?

Check the outside vent with the dryer on high. You should feel strong, warm air and see the flap open fully. If not, call a pro.
