How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent in Florida?
Have the full dryer vent cleaned at least once a year. Large households, homes with pets, roof vents and long runs usually need it every six to nine months, and busy vacation rentals every three to six months. Clean the lint screen after every load.
How often, by household
| Household | Full vent cleaning |
|---|---|
| One or two people, short wall vent | Once a year |
| Family of four or more | Every 6 to 9 months |
| Pets that shed | Every 6 to 9 months |
| Roof vent or long run with several bends | Every 6 to 9 months |
| Vacation rental with frequent turnovers | Every 3 to 6 months |
| Condo building or shared laundry | Every unit yearly, on one schedule |
These are starting points. The best guide is the airflow at your outside vent: if drying times creep up between cleanings, move to a shorter interval.
What to do every load, and every few months
- Every load: empty the lint screen.
- Every few months: wash the lint screen with warm soapy water to remove the film dryer sheets leave behind, and vacuum the lint-trap opening as far as you can reach.
- Twice a year: pull the dryer out and check that the hose behind it isn't crushed, and check that the outside flap opens and closes.
- Once a year or more: have the full line cleaned from the dryer to the outside cap.
Why Florida vents need more attention
Humidity. Damp lint sticks to the inside of the duct instead of blowing out, so it builds up faster than in dry climates.
Year-round laundry. Beach towels, pool towels and sweaty work clothes keep dryers running all year.
Salt air. Near the Gulf, metal caps rust and flaps stick open or shut, which slows the air and lets moisture in. See cap replacement.
Storm season. Hurricanes damage caps and drive rain into vents. A cleaning before June is a good habit. See dryer vents after a hurricane.
The best time of year to schedule it
The U.S. Fire Administration reports that home dryer fires are more common in fall and winter and peak in January. A cleaning in the fall gets ahead of that. If you also want to prepare for hurricane season, spring works well too. The main thing is to put it on the calendar and keep the same month every year.
Signs you're overdue
Clothes needing a second cycle, a hot laundry room, lint at the outside vent, or a flap that barely moves. Our guide to the signs of a clogged dryer vent covers ten of them, with three quick tests.

Questions
Is once a year really enough?
For most small households with a short wall vent, yes. Bigger households, pets, roof vents and long runs need more. If drying times creep up before the year is out, don't wait.
Do new homes need dryer vent cleaning?
Yes. New construction often leaves drywall dust and debris in the duct, and the first year of lint builds up the same way it does in an older home.
How often should a vacation rental dryer vent be cleaned?
Every three to six months for busy rentals, since sheets and towels are washed after every stay. See condo, HOA and rental programs.
Does cleaning the lint screen clean the vent?
No. The screen catches most lint, but some always passes through and builds up in the duct and at the cap.
